Production of Plums-Prunes

We take great care in maintaining the optimal moisture level for our organic prunes . While sorbic acid and potassium sorbate may be used to preserve and extend the shelf life of conventional prunes, this is not the case for organic ones.

Moisture level control and ventilation are key for prunes. Another challenge in pitted prune production is that of achieving a pit level of 2 fragments per box. Both Ashlock and Elliott pitting methods can leave up to 9 pit fragments per box. We are able to reduce this pit fragment level using our x-ray machines and visual controls.

A widely known benefit of prunes is their ability to improve bowel function. This is due both to prunes’ fiber and sorbitol content. Prunes are rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber The combination of soluble and insoluble fiber ensures the slow absorption of nutrients and therefore regulates blood sugar levels while at the same cleansing the digestive tract. Sorbitol, a carbohydrate present in fruit, has the attribute of absorbing and retaining water, which may contribute to prunes’ digestive health benefits.

BENEFITS OF  PRUNES

Prunes are an excellent source of minerals and vitamins such as iron, potassium and vitamin A. Iron is essential to ensure adequate supply of oxygen to the body’s cells and therefore prevent anemia and fatigue, while potassium is needed for muscle and heart function. Vitamin A plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy vision since it is required for the synthesis of a protein in the retina. A widely known benefit of prunes is their ability to improve bowel function. This is due both to prunes’ fiber and sorbitol content. Like apricots prunes are rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber. Prunes can be a beneficial source of nutrition for people who suffer from osteoporosis. This is because prunes contain minerals and vitamins that are important for bone health, in particular the mineral boron. Boron is essential for bone growth and repair. It improves the absorption of magnesium in the body and the levels of vitamin D, which in turn has an impact on the availability of calcium. Studies have shown that prunes promote bone maintenance and prevent bone loss due to their impact on bone cells. As such, prunes can offer a bone-healthy alternative to dairy.

HOW TO USE  PRUNES?

Prunes have a chewy texture and a sweet flavor. They can be eaten alone as a snack or combined with other ingredients such as cereal, oatmeal or nuts in trail mixes. Prunes can also be pureed and added to yogurt or shakes, or spread on toast.

Like other dried fruit, prunes can be incorporated in recipes for baked goods in which they can serve as a natural source of sugar and moisture. They can be chopped and mixed in the batter for cakes, muffins or bread. It is also possible to use prunes in savory recipes by adding them to stews. They can be soaked in water to speed up cooking time.
