Organic Apricot Kernels

We ensure that apricot kernels are delivered to our customers free from any foreign material.

Before accepting the raw material, we test every batch for mycotoxins and amygdalin. We receive different requests regarding amygdalin content with some customers requiring high levels and others low levels. We therefore ensure that the product matches the customer’s needs before accepting it.

Every batch of raw material must be fumigated in a CO2 chamber as apricot kernels attract insects and moths, and non-fumigated products can become infested after they are supplied.

Half organic apricot kernels and broken pieces are taken out using a Sortex machine and visual controls to ensure consistent color and look in the final product. The hard shells of apricot kernels pose a particular problem even when dealing with presorted raw material because they can resemble the kernels themselves, exhibiting the same color and shape. To remove hard shells, laser and x-ray machines are used as well as visual sorting.

The market provides for 2 main quality categories for apricot kernels. The first category, referred to as 1-3-6, is preferred mainly by the cosmetic industry. In this category, the accepted parameters are 1% foreign material, 3% broken pieces and 6% moisture. The second category, referred to as sortex quality, provides for 0% foreign material and broken pieces but the same 6% moisture level. Cleaned apricot kernels are ideally packed in vacuum bags in order to protect them from flies, moths and other insects during transport.Apricot kernels with cyanide levels exceeding those provided under European Union regulations cannot be supplied to EU countries, even for cosmetic purposes, as customs will bar the product from entry

However, the fact that amygdalin ingestion causes cyanide release in the body led countries such as the UK to ban the sale of apricot kernels - a bitter pill to swallow. Other countries such as the USA opted to limit daily intake of apricot kernels to 30g.
